These “Portraits of Belleville,” painted by artist Michael Accunzo, reflect the varied architecture and natural beauty of Belleville. The pictures contain some surprises for newcomers, the country-like quality of old Mill Street, the Alpha Theater on Washington Avenue and the incredible decoration that makes up the Town Hall clock. Most of all, these portraits reflect a community where strong, reassuring images of a town confident within itself and its people, are plentiful.

Michael Accunzo was a Belleville resident with great artistic skill and careful attention to detail. His representational approach yields colorful, accurate depictions of local landmarks. He paints in the American tradition of artists pleased with their local environments and eager to share their personal visions of their towns. He was commissioned by the Library Board of Trustees to paint these Belleville portraits in 1986, marking the naming of the Branch Library for an exceptional Library Trustee, Mrs. Richard A. Shafter.

The paintings were installed August 31, 1987.

“Portraits of Belleville” will be on display during National Library week beginning on Wednesday April 10th.
